چکیده

This paper is intended to analyse the concepts involved in the phenomena of social monitoring and norm-based social influence for systems of normative agents. These are here defined as deliberative agents, representing norms and deciding upon them. Normative agents can use the norms to evaluate others' behaviours and, possibly, convince them to comply with norms. Normative agents contribute to the social dynamics of norms, and more specifically, of norm-based social control and influence. In fact, normative intelligence allows agents to 1. Check the efficacy of the norms (the extent to which a norm is applied in the system in which it is in force), and possibly 2. Urge their fellows to obey the norms. The following issues are addressed: What is norm-based control? Why and how do agents exercise control on one another? What role does it play in the spread of norms?

Autonomous Norm Acceptance

It is generally acknowledged that norms and normative action emphasize autonomy on the side of decision. But what about the autonomous formation of normative goals? This paper is intended to contribute to a theory of how agents form normative beliefs and goals, and to formulate general but non exhaustive principles of norm based autonomous agent-hood – namely goal generation and decision making...

An Agent Model for the Appraisal of Normative Events Based in In-Group and Out-Group Relations

Emotional synthetic characters are able to evaluate (appraise) events as positive or negative with their emotional states being triggered by several factors. Currently, the vast majority of models for appraisal in synthetic characters consider factors related to the goals and preferences of the characters. We argue that appraisals that only take into consideration these “personal” factors are i...

Blame on them, shame on us: combining affective and normative behaviour in intelligent virtual agents

Virtual environments often try to simulate situations where agents should display socially acceptable behaviour, as described by social norms. Actions that fulfil or violate norms can be potential sources for emotions, not just for the agent responsible, but for all agents that witness the event. We claim that the type and intensity of those emotions depends, not only on the salience (importanc...

Intentional Agents and Goal Formation

This paper is about a fundamental aspect of intentional action, namely the process of goal formation. Existing formal theories of agents are found essentially inadequate to account for the formation of new goals and intentions of the agent; on the other hand, the formation of new goals is often viewed as an essential feature of autonomous agents. Autonomous goal-formation is described thanks to...

Normal = Normative? The Role of Intelligent Agents in Norm Innovation

In this paper the results of several agent-based simulations, aiming to test the role of normative beliefs in the emergence and innovation of social norms, are presented and discussed. Rather than mere behavioral regularities, norms are here seen as behaviors spreading to the extent that and because the corresponding commands and beliefs do spread as well. On the grounds of such a view, the pre...
